Map of Turkey in Asia and the Caucasian States of Russia. 1855, Colton

In February of that year, a catastrophic precursor earthquake occurred in Kemalpaşa, Bursa, with a magnitude of 7.5. Over 300 people died during this natural disaster. Hotels, homes and even whole markets were destroyed in during the earthquake. Historical monuments and mosques were also taken in this event, destroying important pieces of archeological history. However, the damage did not end there. An aftershock earthquake struck Bursa in April of the same year with a magnitude of 7.0, this time affecting Gemlik and Mudanya; the aftershock earthquake caused even more damage than the February earthquake, contributing to over 1300 deaths.

This stunning map features original hand coloring in shades of orange, yellow, pink and green. This particular map comes from Colton’s Atlas of the World Illustrating Physical and Political Geography. Published by Johnson & Browning, 172 William St., New York in 1855.
